It seems that, given today's problems with terrorism, things were a lot safer when the "Evil Empire" was around. The only thing we had to worry about was a major nuclear conflict and superpower proxy wars, not some guys blowing themselves up on trains and planes. Do you miss the old days? Also, do you think that James Bond movies were better when the Soviets were around? Should we attempt to get the Russians back into the game like in the movie Canadian Bacon?

Chance and Dalbit, great answers!

Twobitchess - the flaw in your answer is that in the 40+ years of the cold war we didn't have a nuclear conflict with the Ruskies whereas these terrorist are blowing up all over the place. As soon as they're able, they'll use nukes with no hesitation. Some say that al-Qaida already has 10 suitcase nukes placed in the U.S. ready to use on a certain date.

That ship has sailed.

The Soviet Union was dangerous but it was like a lion in the room...you could see it and you knew where it was.

The Terrorists are like mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus....you can feel them, they can kill you, but they're very hard to see.

Yes, the world was definitely safer when the Soviet Union was in power.
Since communism discourages people from religious worship of any kind, everyone lived peacefully in the Soviet Union and the Soviet bloc. After the fall of the USSR, we have orthodox Christians murdering their Islamic neighbors in former Yugoslavia (by organized genocide).
The nuclear warheads were abandoned by the Soviet army, and the possibility exists for these warheads to be removed and sold abroad to the terrorists, etc...if it haven't already occurred.
Religious intolerance will destroy the world as we know it.

There have only been 2 atomic bombs set off off contained in the historic previous of mankind (with the exception of try blasts of route). it really is only through organic success (inspite of consistent vigilance on the component of those who've nuclear guns) that for the reason that those first 2, one hasn't ever fallen into the palms of someone who would use it. The technical element makes it a lot extra sturdy, because no matter if a warhead fell into the palms of a terrorist crew - they'd have extremely some worry determining the thanks to make it detonate (no matter if or not that they had a suicide attacker prepared to set off it). they'd be able to make sure it out - yet you're not to any extent further going to cling onto a warhead for lengthy without someone noticing - they tend to be fairly worry-free to change into attentive to creating use of the right kit. the danger of 'at the same time guaranteed destruction' keeps large international places or governments from employing them hostile to one yet another - and changed into the reason of the 'chilly conflict'. ordinary weaponry will stay used - in the interim nutjobs will continually scream 'we ought to continually nuke them again to the stone age' each and anytime somewhat tiny insignifigant 'terrorist' us of a starts sticking their tongue out at us. i do not understand in the experience that they have got made the international extra secure or no longer. it really is mostly a count number of attitude (and your modern area).

no it wasnt safer ... but unfortunately there was a great opportunity to take advantage of the post soviet era to promote peace and alternate energy sources that was pissed away ... there was also a global support of the US with real sentiment and good will after 911 that we let a madman in the whitehouse squander away, regardless of who was as fault for 911 ...

I think the world would be better if the martyrs would shut up and understand the true will of god and not proclaim a bomb strapped to their chest and running into a crowd and killing them is that will.
