She is wanting some games for her birthday and I'm not sure what is hot and what is not.

My daughter has one (she is 12). Her favorite games are NintenDogs and Animal Crossings. Those are also the two games all her friends have. They like them b/c they can play each other when they are in the same house. HTH

Nintendogs isnt new but its still popular as most young people like the idea of a pet without the real time hassles, there is an add on and a sequal I believe so there is a step in the right direction

Is she a fan of the Olsen twins? If so, I'm sure they have a game or two that you could get. Or if she likes Pirates of the Caribbean (you can choose to be Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner or Elizabeth Swann) or the disney movie Cars, there are games of them.

NintenDOGS is a really cute game (I think...) where you can "adopt" and "play" with dogs....
