NOD32 has won more awards than most antivirus companies. Plus, it has the lowest footprint in regards to system resources.
For free antivirus, see Avast! or AVG.
Norton, Mcafee, PC-Cillian are decent overall, but hog a lot of resources. These companies use to be good, but they are declining in recent years.

I used to think McAfee was the best but a recent major upgrade of theirs really screwed up my PC. They admitted it weeks later and pushed out a fix but it was too late for me. I uninstalled it and went with Windows Live OneCare. What attracted me was the price (apprx. $50/year) and the fact that the license lets you install it on up to three computers.
I have heard a lot of good things about Norton as well. I'd say that Norton/McAfee are the veterans in the neighborhood but Windows Live OneCare is the newcomer to watch out for.

NUMBER 1 is get a router with a built in firewall. Also have a program called System mechanic 6 that has a firewall that prompts you ANYTIME anything other than programs you have specified tries to run or "drop" itself onto your system. It gives you an option to permenatly block that program so you dont have to deal with it over and over again. I use AVG FREE edition for antivirus along with windows and router firewalls, I havent had ONE issue yet!!
