Spy Agencies Say Iraq War Worsens Terror Threat

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 (New York Times) — A stark assessment of terrorism trends by American intelligence agencies has found that the American invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks.

The classified National Intelligence Estimate attributes a more direct role to the Iraq war in fueling radicalism than that presented either in recent White House documents or in a report released Wednesday by the House Intelligence Committee, according to several officials in Washington involved in preparing the assessment or who have read the final document.

The intelligence estimate, completed in April, is the first formal appraisal of global terrorism by United States intelligence agencies since the Iraq war began, and represents a consensus view of the 16 disparate spy services inside government. Titled “Trends in Global Terrorism: Implications for the United States,’’ it asserts that Islamic radicalism, rather than being in retreat, has metastasized and spread across the globe.

No. The invasion of Iraq has made us much more at risk of terrorism. It has increased world wide terrorism many times.

If we had stayed the course in Afghanistan, we would have captured Osama and terrorism would have been reduced. The attack and occupation of Iraq allowed Osama to remain free and Afghanistan is still in a struggle with the other side.

What can we do now??? Is there a strategy for recovery???We may have missed our chance by electing Bush!

An army can fight an army or destroy a country, but is only a target for terrorism. The best defense against terrorist is people organized in neighborhood watches all over the world to identify the terrorist and report them to the police.

we are safer, but alas, that is what is also making us weaker. As the left tears away at our administration in the hopes of coming into power the enemy is still out there. I hope enough "sane" Americans remember this and vote in Nov. 2006 and 2008.

It is strange how the left forgets that they grew bold and stronger under Clinton ....and struck here. The may be gaining support and strength in the middle east, but we are no longer sitting back and waiting for them to come to us. we are meeting them on the battlefield and are killing them.

Just as Liberals like Chuck Schumner, Hillary Clinton and Elliot Spitzer, Ted Kennedy and such rabid fools don't try to disarm the American people we will be safe.

BTW, when was the last time the United States was attacked?

If we where ever in real serious danger, don't you think alot more would have happened here before 9/11? Before the patriot act and things of that nature. nothing but a bunch of fear mongers! we are probably in more trouble abroad than we where before we took it all out on Iraq. But no less I think here than we were before the events of 9/11.

We are heading into a world of disasters created by the war in Iraq. If a normal thinking person cannot see that now, then too bad for everyone.......

not by a long shot

no matter how it's spun

GW and his neocons have sailed this country into shipwreck on the rocks

where we could have been united, now we are divided and in perpetual wars

only winners: stockholders in companies with war goods for more wars and the corporations that push for the 'war on terror' that hurts us all

now we don't have anyone we trust neighbors all afraid to talk to each other and afraid of the very thing that made the US strong: diversity

We would be safer if everyone brushed up on their Bruce Lee moves. The air hostesses did and look how safer flights are now.

As you state in your article, National Intelligence groups state that the US not only is not safer, but in fact, the war in Iraq has created more terrorists than eliminated.

We will only eliminate terrorists when we eliminate the problems that cause them to want to be terrorists in the first place....poverty, oppression, hunger, etc.

Know any fat, wealthy free terrorists?
