Fish tanks have lids, and the more careful you are to not over feed them they easier they are to keep alive. Bettas can go in any container and you only need to change half of the water once a week with tap water that has been aged 24 hours (buy flake food asthey eat it easier then regular food). Take a look at these tanks

The thing with cats and fish, well. It is only partially true. Cats really aren't all out to get fish.

It is sort of like cats and dogs. Most dogs don't really have to many issue with cats.

Betta fish are easy to maintain if simplicity is what you want.

Nemo was a clown fish. Those are also fairly easy to maintain, but much more expensive initial investment. They require salt water tank. Salt water tanks are interesting though, so if you also like fish maybe it would be a fun thing to try.

Your son will lose intrest in the real fish pretty fast, because they are really not interesting pets for kids (can't pet them, play with them, and they don't talk like the ones on TV), so the question is really, do YOU want a fish?

If so, bettas (aka siamese fighting fish) are pretty easy, you don't need a filter or heater and a one or two gallon bowl or aquarium is comfortable for them. You only need to clean the tank every week or two if you don't overfeed them. Gold fish are really easy, too but messier.
Lots of cats will ignore fishtanks altogether, but if yours start snooping, get a mesh screen that fits over the top of the tank snugly (cheaper than a proper tank hood).

Fish are not low maitenance. They just can't complain and no one will call the cops on you for keeping them in an unhealthy environment.

No fish should be kept in a bowl. that's like sticking you in a closet and telling you to be happy. Your best bet is getting a five gallon hex aquarium, and maybe a betta. If you keep the tank at a nice temperature, you won't have to get a heater(they need temperatures of at least 78-82 degrees F). The five gallon hex will come with lighting and filter in the top.

Just please don't put your fish in a bowl. They don't belong there.
