we are taught in school that science has 3 main branches:

physics, chemistry, biology ( including planetary science ).

i find a more basic organization comprising of only 2 divisions:

physics and "complex informational systems".

chemistry can be fully described in physics (no high level ideas are introduced ).

biology requires the understanding of the theory of evolution ( a high level idea ). this idea is not physical in nature but more abstract idea based on selection of preferred entities.

other ideas such as these include computer science and artificial intelligence as well as fields such as sociology and economics.

i group these disciplines as "complex informational systems" whose ideas are dependent on the human capacity to organize larger systems ( life , computers, earth science etc ).

physics on the other hand, seeks to explain basic interactions of space, time, energy, and matter in the simplest possible description.

of course, the backbone of science is mathematics and logic, which are disciplines in their own right but not technically science ( which is based on experimental observations )

hope it shed new light to a classic question !

:)

There are only two, actually. Physics and stamp collecting :-). Seriously, though, science has many branches like sociology, biology, chemistry, physics. They are generally presumed to be hierarchical. For example, chemistry can in principle be described using the mathematical tools of physics (elementary interactions), but molecules are so complicated, a difference and more phenomenological approach (aka chemistry) is needed. Science, however, can be broken down into two distinct *activities*, though: theory and experiment.

My guess...
Physical Science, Natural Science, and Life Science

Physical - Physics, astronomy exc
Natural - Geology... exc
Life - Biology exc

Mathematics is used in all of them, I'd see it more as a tool.
