I can't tell where you are geographically ,but, the obvious starting place is something or somewhere local because that will generate the most interest and have the most connection to your "audience" shall we say. For instance , tracing something interesting from an old newspaper clipping or a family of interest in your area, Maybe a mystery or heroic event of the times in medicine. in my area the first cesarean section was performed here by a man named Jessee Bennett , a physician , to save the lifee of his wife and child which he did. Get you thinking ?and the was a recent article in my paper about it.

Do a project on the different camps here in the USA that existed in our own back yards during WW2, IE, Japanese internment camps are the most popular ones spoken of but there were camps in almost every state that had people from different nationalities. This is not a bad thing necessarily, so it is not like you are doing anything against your country it is the fact that many people were in camps and the reasons it was done. What was the threat felt, what groups of people were rounded up and for how long? Where were these camps? Who ran them? What happened to the camps? Relate it to today and the fact that after 9-11 they rounded up people again. What was the publics reaction now vs then?

Try doing a project on the history of the Great Depression in America and how it changed life in the US such as the rise of labor unions, the implementation of Social Security, the use of public works projects to stimulate the regrowth of the economy and also the effect on our banking system and the changes made because of the depression. This is one of the most fascinating periods of US history and was well documented with film and photographs which could be a boon to your projects visual aids.
