Sure's it's possible! Start your research with a trip to the National Endowment for the Arts website, if you are from the United States:
http://www.nea.gov/
Then, head to Google and to your local public library to do some research.
There ARE grants and fellowships out there for writers, however it is not an easy process to get one. They are competitive and the applications are long. There are people who's only job is to research grants and write grant proposals for organizations that need funding.
But, this doesn't mean it is impossible! Do your homework and you could find something that is just right for you.

It's possible to get one on a nonfiction book, but it's difficult--I've been a research assistant for one of my professors, who is a Ph.D., published, and pretty well respected in her field, to work on her book for the past year. She's still trying to get a grant application in order to travel to get the necessary books and papers for her research, which are shut up in old museums, libraries, and universities across the ocean. Hasn't looked like much hope yet.

I am certain you can get grants to research non-fiction book topics. I am not sure about novels.
