Im bucking for the best answer.
Here's a chart with gas prices that goes back to 1947

it says the national average was:
Leaded regular = $1.31
Unleaded= 1.38
Premium unleaded 1.47

that seems kinda high to me but gas prices are always a little cheaper here in arkansas.
I payed 2.06 per gallon when I filled up today at the Pilot in Russellville, ar

National average price for regular unleaded gasoline $2.80-$3.00 per gallon. Price per barrel of oil hit $77.00.

i can't say that i recall exactly, but i think it would have been around 70cents per gallon. it was about 79 per gal when i started driving in, i think, 86...
based on other answers i'm seeing, i guess i was way off... :( good thing i didn't state it as fact.
