Though x, y, and z are probably more common, variables can be any letter from a to z. You will also see Greek letters used if you get into higher levels of Math

You can use any letters or symbols for variables because variables just represent an unknown. I think x, y, and z are most commonly used because there are x, y, and z planes in mathemetics. They're probably solving for coordinate/values of x, y, and z, but you wouldn't have to use them for variables if you didn't want to.

Interesting question! My guess would be that letters make more sense as variable than numbers do, since a variables represents a number anyway, and I would assume we use X,Y,Z as they are some of the lesser used letters of the alphabet.

I've seen problems using A, B, and C, so I don't think there's anything special about X,Y, and Z.

I suppose using letters is preferable to using words like Cow, House or chicken...

3 * chicken - house = cow.
Solve in terms of cow.

We can use any letters of the alphabet we want.
We use x,y and z because it is the custom to do so. No obligation.

really, if you think about it, you can use any letters you want...it doesn't really matter what letters you use..Maybe they wanted to get x y and z used more often then say a b and c are you can also use letters and numbers together...

There is usually a possiblity fo numbering the sequence a) , b), etc. To aviod any conflict this is used

who said that??? you can use any letter you want to.you can even use symbols like lamda or mue...however letters like s,v,m,t cannot be used as they represent speed,velocity gradient and time respectively.
