It sounds like its almost the bearings going dry, and very possible since my house is so 30 years old. What are some general things that go wrong that I could fix?

Spraying it with WD40 is the best thing but if you don't have any on hand you can always spray it with non-stick cooking spray like Pam. It really works.

if it is an older ceiling fans, they didn't come with a sealed oil compartment. Up on the motor housing, you should see a small hole somewhere - put a few drops of household oil (like sewing machine oil). If you don't it may stop circulating completely until you oil it.
