The women of the South have a softer personality exterior - all though they can be tough as nails on the inside. They can put you in your place if you anger them - and you may not realize till two days later. What do you think the name Steel Magnolia means? -Southern sweetness and tenacious drive

People in the South talk with a southern twang. People in the North talk like a Yankee. In little towns and the countryside in the South, there are lots of black people. In little towns and the countryside in the North, there are mostly whites. Lots of blacks live in rural areas of the South because that is were the Plantations that they worked on are located. They make up 30-40% of the total population in southern states. The ones who left the South settled places like New York, Chicago, and Detriot. The cost of living has always been less in the South. Unionization (and $36/ hour) aren't so important. Southerners like country music and NASCAR auto racing; Northerners like NHL hockey. There are more Protestants (Baptists/ Methodists) in the South, and there are more Catholics in the North. Northerners have maple syrup, and Southerners farm tobacco and pecans. The history of the South is filled with racial strife. Barnyard sodomy is the stigma of the hick.

I lived in the South for a long time and grew up in the North. A few things are: generally more respectful of elders in the South (say "sir" and "ma'am" or get smacked in the mouth); lots of "Southern Pride" even decades after the rebellion; Southern hospitality is a real thing, not so much in the North

The hospitality and friendliness of the South is a MYTH. People of the North are much more friendly.
The South had a culture of slavery. How friendly is that?!? Enslaving your fellow man has to be about the rudest and most unfriendly act committed by people.
In 1860, there were 6.4 million free people and 3.7 million slaves living in the South. That is one slave for every 1.7 free people! Incredibly unfriendly. Unless southern mentalities regarding their fellow man have changed 180 degrees (unlikely), the South is extremely unfriendly.

I've observed that all over the world, people who live in northern climates are more reserved, less friendly and exacting. The opposite goes for those living in southern climates.

one cultural difference is the language. if you listen to the different words people in the south use (like ya'll and things like that), the people in the north don't say.

Northerners feel they are most literate and fashionable.
Southerners feel they are more hospitable and normal.
The differences are getting less and less noticeable due to a blending effect from frequent traveling and moving.

Being from Chicago, we say, 'restroom' instead of, 'outhouse'.
'Toilet' instead of 'turlet'...'enough' instead of 'nuff' ...
And I think we say it faster, too!
