In what context? Hel was the old Norse/European realm of the dead which was a place in between a cold mist and hail, the things that symbolized death and destruction in that part of the world. It was run by a female deity known as Hagalaz, the Queen of Hel. I think it was supposed to have seven or nine chambers, or something like that, one of which was Valhalla, where the warriors went. Hel was not a bad place, nor a good place, just the other world you went to when you died, and although Hagalaz was not evil, per se, she could be vindictive, hence the term "old Hag." Later, in King James day, Hel became converted to the Christian religion as Hell, and given the characteristics of heat and fire, things that would have been scary to the Middle Eastern regions where Christianity came from (this was very effective from the King's stand point who was a Scott and as such considered by his people to be a know-nothing hick. So, he turned his European Celtic superstitions against them and used the brand new invention of the printing press to forever secure his politics in our religion. Brilliant move on his part). Really, Hell would have been a foreign concept to first century Christians, who believed that either you joined God in the afterworld, or you simply returned to oblivion (the absence of God is nothing, since God is everywhere). But, since we stopped fearing the idea of no longer existing, it was thought that we'd behave better if we thought we could be tortured in the after life.

In Norse mythology, Hel is the ruler of Helheim, the realm of the dead. She is the youngest child of the evil god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. She is usually described as a horrible hag, half alive and half dead, with a gloomy and grim expression. Her face and body are those of a living woman, but her thighs and legs are those of a corpse, mottled and moldering.

The gods had abducted Hel and her brothers from Angrboda's hall. They cast her in the underworld, into which she distributes those who are send to her; the wicked and those who died of sickness or old age. Her hall in Helheim is called Eljudnir, home of the dead. Her manservant is Ganglati and her maidservant is Ganglot (which both can be translated as "tardy").
