First of all it sounds like you are teaching contemporary as this style can be anything from ballet moves to modern music right down to the more weird dance type moves. It is also called neo classical. Maybe before you start teaching a dance you should point out that the dance is going to be either contemporary or neo classical and then the people you are teaching will know what to expect. You don't say whether you are doing this for a dance school or for maybe amateur production. OR possibly a school. Do you have guidelines given to you for what the dance is meant to be as if you are not following these that could be what is causing the problem. Just remember that dance is meant to be fun for all and if it isn't then you need to look at that.

I hear you. I learned ballet when I was a teenager. Now I'm a Teacher in High school and right now I'm trying to develop a choreography for a modern dance, but I find that whatever I learned in my young years comes back to me whether I want it or not. Nothing wrong with it I think, just try to come up with ballet steps but in a faster way, so nobody can criticize your style. Another thing: If you're dealing with teens, let them know that you are the one who's in charge. Otherwise they won't respect you.

First of all, nothing wrong with mixing dance styles.
Expectations are another thing, lol. A lot of people don't get modern dance because it is not always athletic or presentational.

um well i'm not much of a dancer, and much less of a choreographer. I'm not sure exactl what you mean by mixing, but i guess depending what you mix together, it can't be that bad. If anything some people might no thing some dance's moves can flow well with another's. But if you like it, stick to it and maybe it'll catch on. I dunno
