After the Civil War, slavery was outlawed, and the plation owners slaves, which they paid for and which greatly contributed to produciton on the plantations were freed by the government and they were given no compensation. As a result many plantation owners lost there property (slaves) and went bankrupt, and the goverment never paid them back. I hear all this talk about blacks getting paid compensation for there ancestors being enslaved, but what about the land owners who had there property taken from them, shouldn't there ancestors who were robbed get something? How would you like it if someone stole your property and ruined you? What do you think?

What do you want to open that can of worms for???
Ever hear of the "spoils of war?" Well in this case they "the spoils" were set free which is why they went to war in the first place. Why should the winners pay the losers. War is hell is it not? Seems ot me it would have been better all around if the plantation owners paid their slaves like the Scots/Irish were as indigenous labor with a get well date to freedom. So many lives would have been saved but they would not hear of it. No we don't own the plantations owners a thing. War is war and people all over the world have lost their property because of it. It is just the price of it all. My opinion on the subject is this: We did wrong to the Indians and we did wrong to the Japanese American and payment is being made in those areas as they should be. The Southerns did wrong to hire slaves...let them pay for it with the the loss of their property.

Keep up this nonsense and the French will be complaining they got taken advantage of over the Louisanna Purchase, The Russians over the selling of Alaska, the Mexican will reclaim Texas and California and the Indians will reclaim Manhatten.

Where will it end?

I do not think the decendants of the plantaions owners should get paid anything. I also do not think the decedendants of the slaves should get paid anything.

There is no one alive today who was either a slave or a slave owner in the United States.

Why should my tax dollars be used to pay someone for what one dead person did to another dead person?

There are so many needs in this country. How about a little more of those tax dollars helping poor people with necessities like food and medical care?

The idea of a decedendant getting paid for damages caused to a dead ancstor is, in my opinion, just stupid.

ARE YOU KIDDING!!!!!!!! WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU EVEN ASK THIS??? That question is as stupid as the one of paying the slaves. This is 2006 dude, people like you that keep bringing up this crap is what keeps the hatred stirring. Let it go. I am quite sure you were not alive back then, however if you compelled to see that restitution is made to those that had THEIR land taken/lost because of the "property" that was rightly released then pay them. Quite frankly the so called owners deserved what they got. Owning slaves is inhumane AND FLAT OUT WRONG. Personally I am appalled at the whole idea of it and anyone who even remotely tries to justify it deserves and will get poetic justice eventually. I am wondering if you would happen to be one those ancestors that would be receiving "something"?

The first people entitled to any compensation from the US government are the aborigal nations ( you call them 'Indians' - Cherokees etc.) for violating over 140 different treaties AND for mandating ( by four US presidents ) genocide while the white people moved west. The rest, including blacks and slave owners, can wait in line . . .

According to Margaret Mitchell in her novel, "Gone With The Wind," if the plantation owners were willing to sign a loyalty oath to the USA after the Civil War, they WERE paid for the loss of those slaves.

Most planation owners wouldn't sign it, though.

I think this is historically correct.

I think we should pay the plantation owners reparations after we pay the "ex slaves," which will be NEVER!
