Depends on your subject of study.
For example, in the sciences grad school can last anywhere from 5 to 7 years. But I know anthropologists who took 9. I've heard the degree can take at least 6 years in the humanities.

It depends on what type of degree you are pursuing. Master's degrees will always take less time than a doctoral (phd) program. The typical Master's program usually lasts 1-3 years while a doctoral degree can easily last 4-8 years! If you want a PhD, you better be passionate about the program because of the opportunity costs involved.

A masters degree takes between 1.5 and 3 year depending on the program, the school, and the specific requirements of the department. A PhD takes another 2-6 years after that depending on you, your adviser, your project, your motivation, and your school. You do need to do the masters work before a PhD, but you can enroll in a PhD program with a bachelors and do the masters en-route to the PhD.
