Greetings...
Many of these were made and imported with the unfortunate choice of oak with a poly coating (if any). Then the sun and wet had their merry way with it.... and zap.

If the bench will be outdoors then yes, cedar is a good choice, But, for maximum life use Teak, then next choice is mahogany, any of these with a tight grain pattern will do. Then go to a boat supply store for the correct finish. BTW Teak is used on almost all exterior boat wood.... 'cause it lasts.
But if price plays a large factor.... Cedar (preferably Southern ) is great... Just avoid knotty wood if you can, then use a good oil stain finish.. this can be reapplied when needed with no peeling to deal with.

Woods vary in flexibility and strength, so if this is an issue compare em at the store with a good bending test....

Hope this sits right with ya... and good luck.

Home Depot has the same bench. Probably Lowe's too.

I would use Redwood or Cedar, both can take the weather well.

If it stays outside, you can use cedar.
