The fern. I've found sites listing species that have 480 or 768 or even 1200 chromosomes!

No humans are not the "best" and no it's not true that "According to evolution the more an organism evolves [whatever that means] the more chromosomes it gets."

Humans aren't even in the running for most chromosomes. Many plants, and even the lowly amoeba has us beat. The butterfly has 380.
Other contenders:
White Ash 138
Carp 100
Goldfish 94
Sweet Potato 90
Turkey 82
Chicken 78
Dog 78
Duck 78
Horse 64
Cow 60
Silkworm 56
Cotton 52
Amoeba 50
Chimp 48
Tobacco 48
Human 46

Llamas and camels have 2N=74, or 37 chromosomal pairs (compare to a human's 23)

Pocket gophers (!) have 2N= 78

and a species of tarsius monkey has a 2N=80, or 40 pairs. (mammalian world)
*****

apparently goldfish have 47 pair, hermit crabs 127, and ferns (of all things) >250 pair.

Please forgive me, I work with mice :-)
