Pointy end up (look at garlic and it is clear). And the depth depends on the size of the bulb. The bigger the bulb (like daffodils and tulips) the deeper--5-6 inches deep. The smaller (freesias, dutch irises, tigridia lilies, etc) the less deep. Read the package if you are purchasing them and they always say the depth and spacing recommendations. One cool thing I've done w/ bulbs is to multi layer the pot w/ several kinds so that the largest are on the bottom, smallest the top layer.

A general rule of thumb is to plant a bulb 3 times it's depth. So if the bulb is 1 inch tall, plant it 3 inches deep. 2 inches tall = 6 inchs deep.
Always put a bit of bonemeal ( fertilizer, slow release organic and promotes blooms) in the bottom of the hole and where possible, plant in clumps of 3 or 5, spacing the bulbs out with the apporpriate space between them - same as for depth.
Oh, and yes, pointy bit up :0)

Root down. Sometimes it's hard to tell which end is which on a bulb, but nature is very forgiving. If you accidently plant a bulb upside down, it will still grow - believe it or not, the stem will find it's way to the sun.

Some bulbs are not clear cut on pointed end up. Most bulbs will have a hairy part. The hairy part is the rootbed and this is the end you put in the soil with the other end up.
