I just got the axels changed and it was driving fine until yesterday. It sounded like metal crunching and now sounds like a constant hum of metal against metal. Could this be my ball bearings? That is what the mechanic that put the axels in said.

sounds to me like your mechanic forgot to repack the grease in them when he had them out a real mechanic would have forseen this probem and replaced the bearings if they were bad. instead he didnt and used the same contaminated grease as well. even if it is a rear wheel drive axel you have to pack the bearings until the oil gets to them its a rule of thumb. i hope you didnt pay much for this service. and dont let him mechanic lingo you into paying for it as a new added problem. its his fault.

It could be, when ball bearings go out it gets tougher to drive on the highway, and you hear a grating sound. The axels might not be put on quite right either

It sounds like worn out brakes to me. But you need to give more info. What kind of car? Front wheel drive or rear wheel drive? Does the noise get louder when you apply the brakes? Was it the front axles or the rear? If the front, do you feel anything through the steering wheel? It really does not matter any way, you need to get the car to a mechanic because either one of these conditions is dangerous.

Today's cars have roller bearings, not ball bearings. If you have had work done on you axles it might be the constant velocity (CV) joints if front wheel drive. The bearings on a rear wheel drive car are usually sealed and require no servicing but can still go bad.

OK, first off, welcome to Yahoo Answers.

Now, considering you say axles, it's rear wheel drive. Maybe a clissic muscle car? It's possible someone forgot to refill the differential with oil.

It seems odd that he put in new axles, and not change the bearings and oil seals..

Or, are you talking about C\V joints on a newer car?

Or are you talking about the front axles on a 1985 Chevy 4x4 truck.
