I read that the information gets translated into radio waves therefore does it go through a satellite? if so how? and if not then how does it get to the receiving computer?

In much the same way a cordless phone works. It is transmitted through the air. Most transmit at 2.4Ghz (radio frequency). I have (or had) a cordless phone that, every time it rang, I would drop my wireless connection.
