Not much of significance. I will give you the basic differences but some links that can give you a lot more detail are below.

Communism is the natural progression of socialism. As socialism progresses in a government at some point it collapses from its own weight. In essence the system has taken so much from those who have earned it and given it to those who have not that there becomes a consistent shortfall or deficit, sort of like the US today. After the deficit reaches alarming amounts the government will begin to take control of the means of production so it can cover the deficits since it is still "giving" money it does not own away. As this progresses farther some of those who own means of production beging to fight back, then the government has the "national police" start fighting back and you have your communist takeover of the US.

It really is quite simple, people need to help each other, not the government. You see the people have the money and the means of production and are bascially good. The government has to steal money from those who produce to "help" people but really it is not help that is given it is dependence. So you can see socialism fails, always and finitely, not a matter of if, just when.

The first link has a lot in common with the democratic party agenda and is a must read for anyone who doubts where we are being led

Little 'C' communism refers to communes, like those Kibbutzes in Israel, where people voluntarily enter them, and agree to share all the wealth.

Big 'C' Communism refers to state communism, like in the USSR, China, North Korea, Vietnam, East Germany, Eastern Europe, Camodia, and Cuba. It is in principle like a little-'C' commune except that people are coerced to be part of the system. In practice such governments ended up extremely violent toward their own people, and are responsible for more than a 100 million civilian deaths in the 20th century, eclipsing even the horrors of the Nazis.

Socialism is a bit more general, and would apply to both little 'C' and big 'C' communism. But it would also apply--and usually does apply--to any kind of government where there are laws intenteded to share the wealth, and efforts by the government to manage and control the economy.

They have both been given a dirty name, but it isn't the "form " of government or dictatorship that is evil , it's the Abuse of Power, this would include capitalism as we see now with the Bush administration. Communism is socialism, socialism isn't always communism; a system where everyone is planned as equal sharing the benefits of labor and profits. Socialism can be government control of anything such in the USA , the armed forces and taxes.

According to Marx, socialism is a stage on the way to communism, which is the more advanced stage of humyn organization not yet achieved in China or the Soviet Union, even according to Lenin, Stalin and Mao.

According to Marx, under socialism we have a dictatorship of the proletariat which is a government organized for the defense of survival "rights." Also, distribution goes by the principle "from each according to his/her ability, to each according to his/her work."

Under communism, according to Marx, the government disappears and there is economic cooperation as well. The principle of distribution becomes "from each according to his/her ability, to each according to his/her need."
