I would say he volunteered to do the record attempt.
From my understanding of the health and safety laws in the UK it is illegal for anyone or any company to ask you to place yourself in danger whilst in their employment. If you feel there is a risk to your own health and safety, you have the right to refuse with no come back on your self.
Richard Hammond is and hopefully will continue to be an excellent presenter. Top Gear has always been about pushing the boundaries and I love it.

The BBC didnt ask him to do it.
The BBC dont write the script for Top Gear, the Presenters write the script. James May was supposed to be driving the car but he backed out, and Hammond volounteered.
People like Hammond live for challenges in life like this, he loves it and we love watching it. He's a great presenter, the crash was nobody's fault, it was just a risk that he knew he was running and was prepared to take.
I hope Top Gear doesnt get cancelled, its the best program on BBC TV

I'm led to believe james may was the guy destined for this task, but for some reason the hamster had to step in?? My question over this is the track (runway used) I am a regular visitor to SANTA POD, and the surface at a drag strip is coated in an adhesive to help with traction when accelerating at these speeds. It appears from what i have seen of the footage, a traction or tyre failure error??? Yes i can't see why the BBC should'nt have expected a presenter from top gear to take on such a task, provided that they were well informed of the dangers!!

We love that show because it's silly
i.e. the convertible people carrier they made and then had to take it through a car wash was hilarious.
Racing a climber up a mountain in a car
Getting a 4x4 to the top of a mountain
3 sports cars for £1500 ETC
they got to try more and more daft stunts.
Well after suffering a Jeremy Clarkson book on my holiday I'm just disappointed it wasn't him driving it . At least it would stop him writing a sequel!

He was asked to drive the vehicle for a television program. He had already completed a number of runs and the last of the day was the one that he crashed on. At this time it doesn't seem to have been caused by Richard but a mechanical problem with what seems to be with the chute deploying itself.
Lets face it, any of us, Richard included, drive our vehicles almost every day and accident occur, quite often fatal and we are not travelling at anywhere near the speed that he was. He was doing this for himself and for entertainment of the public. I wish him a speedy recovery

He thrives speed, is an accomplished driver, to him it was just another challenge but he lives life to the full and this time it got the better of him.
He will be back as soon as he's fit enough, doing equally adventurous stunts and having all the safety measurements in place.
Just think what he'd be like if H & S was not in place............he'd be a gonner.
Its not for us to judge whether it was his fault, their fault, who ever's fault.
He chose to do it, he had all the facts, he knew the risks and he went ahead with it anyway, end of.
Just glad that he's recovering well.

Richard Hammond is a grown man and i'm sure if he felt he was over stepping the mark and putting his life in danger he would never have agreed to do it, don't you think?!

I think he wanted to drive it do you not think?
Its not up to anyone else to judge what happened
By it's very nature an accident is something that no one can predict.
The hamster is doing well by all accounts and he should count himself one of the luckiest people in the world.
We should not let the namby pamby do gooders of this world condem the bbc or anyone involved with topgear.
Getwell soon hamster!

I think the bigger point is the fact he was on drugs. Must have been Top Gear.
At least him and Elton John now have something in common, they both have skid marks on their helmets.
