I have the tools and traning for this. But it seems all my money goes toward adds. What would be a cheaper way to get the word out. I enjoy working for home owners.

I would suggest opening a website with pictures of your work in various stages, so your prospects will be able to see how you manage your jobs.

To market it, I'd suggest building your site specifically for the search engines to be able to find your local site.

There are some tools and links to help you with that here:

You can then post this website to places like craigslist.org for your specific city, or some other online site like buy&sell or such.

I hope this helps.

You need to have enough working capital that you could pay your team and buy supplies for a full six months without getting any work. If you can't, then you should be thinking of working for another contractor until you have the requisite capital.

In the meantime, if you have a small ad in a community newspaper advertising simple home improvements at reasonable rates, you should be able to pick up enough local business that you can do when you're not working. Most of your business will come from word of mouth, so ALWAYS leave your customers satisfied. (And yet you can't let them walk all over you either, so keep an eye out for the real penny pinchers.)

Start slow, and don't overextend yourself. The worse thing you can do is be so impatient to succeed NOW that you end up ruining your business instead.
