Needles scare me and I'm not all that great with pain...but I'm trying to decide if a bit of pain would be worth it to get a cool-looking tattoo on my lower back. I'm not thinking of anything huge that will take up half my back, but not just a teeny little thing either. For those of you who have gotten tattoos, how much do you think it would hurt?

I have a tatoo on my lower back, the first minute hurt, but you get used to it. I have 5 tattoos that mean alot to me and I never think of the pain.

Darling.. the answer above mine is a very good one.. Make sure everything is super clean!! I just got my tattoo like 3 weeks ago, and I absolutely LOVE it!! However, mine's not on my lower back.. I would suggest NOT getting one there. EVERYONE has them there, and most of my guy friends call them "tramp stamps". I honestly think they're trashy looking there. I recommend getting something small at least for your first tattoo. Also, I would suggest getting it somewhere easier to cover..

BUT.. as far as the pain, it will hurt a little bit. I have a VERY low tolerance for pain and while I didn't cry (like I thought I would) I did squeeze my boyfriend's hand pretty hard. The outline hurts but you can hardly feel them doing the fill-in. Good Luck!!

It's not so much painful as it is uncomfortable. When they do the black outline it feels like lttle shocks on your spine. If you want to know if you can stand it I suggest you get a thick rubber band and put it around your wrist keep snapping it a few times and that's exactly what it will feel like. The top of your foot is the most painful area I've ever had tattooed. Just be sure it's something you really love and will love forever! Avoid characters or cheezy sayings. I had chines letters tattooed on my lower back and now that it's passe my friends tease me by syaing does that say "I'll have a #4 beef w/ broccoli hold the MSG"

All of the above answers can be correct but most importantly, be very sure that the tattoo artist you chose uses sterilized needles and equipment!! This is so much more important that wondering about the pain - always ask to see their equipment before beginning, i.e. sterilizing machine, etc. - don't be afraid to ask! Watch what they do before starting - all equipment should be in sterile bags - you don't want a "dirty" needle used on your body - :)

It hurts, real bad. But if you really love the tattoo, you'll do it and it will be worth it.
