The fruit looks to be growing partially around the bush's branches. Have seen these before. They taste like sour apples. Anyone have an idea what they are?

Lucky you! You have quince! Lots of old timey recipes out there to try.

It is a Chaenomeles, Japanese quince. This deciduous shrub produces flowers in the spring and yellow edible fruit in the fall ,used for preserves.

Sounds like quince, but I'm just guessing. They smell wonderful. Some people make quince jelly and jam out of them. If you leave them in a bowl or in a dresser drawer they provide a heavenly scent.

A picture would be useful. Depending on where you live, it could be a persimmon, or an ornamental pear. Lots of candidates.

They sound like deer apples or crab apples. They are small in size and are very sour.
