I have just inherited a collection that belonged to my grandfather and I am 47 years old. I would like to find out where I can information on the value of some of these stamps. The collection is quite extensive and I dont know where to start.

Try to get a Scott's Stamp Catalog. Amazon has for about $60

You can try your public library, they will have a stamp
collection series on stamps that you can refer to and
see the current value. Or check your phone book for
a stamp dealer in your community and they can look
it up for you and assit with the possible ideas on which
would be the best route to go if your going to sell the
collection or a set at a time.
