Stoning women, temporary marriages, cutting off hands of thieves, beheading adulterers, and many other acts reported to be punishments in the Middle East are wrong and are unforgiveable. I suspect most muslims find them abhorrent too, but these are not reasons to hate all muslims.

International Bodies, the UN and countries should make it illegal for these acts to be performed. That is a way of stopping these barbaric acts.

What's interesting to me is to see how other countries view the US and some of the US practices as barbaric and abhorrent.

International human rights groups produce reports that document violations in all countries across the world.

I would put no more faith in the UN than I would a paper towel stopping a mid-sized truck.

If your point is that the UN should be a force to behold, then I am totally against your point of view. Say the UN does make it "illegal", what's to say they wont later come back and say that Democracies are also illegal? Do you want a collaboration of OTHER governments deciding your fate? I certainly dont.

You do live in la-la land. The UN doesn't do squat about anything. We of course shouldn't get involved. No matter what barbaric acts are committed, we should simply and politely ask the governments of the Middle East to stop treating their citizens so badly. That is the ideal method espoused by democrats. Only republicans have the guts to try to help these people; democrats talk it to death.

The UN can not dictate how countries legislate crime within their borders.

The "punishments" that is used in the Middle East are the same ones from biblical times. I think that criminals have evolved, but those very punishments are highly effective. You gonna steal in a place where if caught you will lose your hands? Or molest a child if you will lose "Little Willy"?

Muslims are very heavy in tradition. What was around in biblical times is still around in their dominated civilizations. They are proud of their resistance to modernization, and their punishments have nothing to do with "terrorist" activities.

Poverty and the feeling of helplessness is what contributes to people joining terrorist organizations. If you would really like to know the feelings that contribute, ask gang members in the inner cities of the United States. Many of the same contributing factors for young teens joining gangs in the inner cities are the same factors leading to young men and women in the Middle East joining the terrorist organizations. It is everywhere - just under different names, depending upon where one lives.

This stuff all goes on in Saudi Arabia and usually draws quite a crowd. Beheadings and stonings draw the best, same for UAE & Yeman. However these are close buddies of the US so it's ok.

I think you said it quite well.

You should understand though, that there is no mechanism to make punishments written into the laws of sovereign nations "illegal." When the actions of one nation become so offensive to the world community that it can no longer be tolerated, the only two options are to attempt persuasion, (diplomacy) or to compel change through the use of physical force. (war)

One question! Do you want the UN or someone else coming into America and telling us we are doing something illegal and MAKE us stop what we have voted on as a country?

These punishments are the acts and laws of the Arabs and the Muslims and will not be changed.

One of the functions of why the US is in Iraq is to set up a democracy. Democratic ideals are the only way to stop these savageries.

making something "illegal" really will not do much to stop it, just because you deem it against the law doesn't mean that law will be enforced or anyone will give a dime about it.
