Puerto Ricans come to America for a variety of reasons. Some for employment opportunities, some for educational advantages and or training, some to live... must like the Americans living in Puerto Rico.
Puerto Ricans, by the way, have served in this country's military service in every major war and/or conflict since the First World War, and have been American citizens since 1917.
The first Puerto Ricans started coming to the USA around the latter part of the 1800s; immigrants started coming during the late 1920s after the First World War. There was a large influx during the 1940s to 1950s where many found employment in the garment industry. By the 1960s, many were seeking higher education (in spite of the discouragement by teachers) and becoming professionals in almost every field of endeavor, such as writers, medical doctors, laboratory technicians, lawyers, education, etc. Boston, California, Chicago, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and are the states where the greater Puerto Ricans concentrations can be found today working in every capacity and industry.

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States ,and there are NO travel restrictions to other US areas,so they are free to come to the mainland at any time.Puerto Ricans, whether island-born or mainland-born,are USA citizens by birth .
The treaty of Paris(1898) gave Puerto Rico to the United States
Now the present commonwealth status means :common citizenship, common defense, common currency, and a common market. But Puerto Ricans do not pay US federal taxes and cannot vote in US elections.
So this circular migration pattern to and from the island, el vaivén migratorio, comes with the territory. The employment probabilities are/seem to be always higher on the mainland and so are the wages.
All it takes is this cocktail:better opportunities+geographical proximity+citizenship by birth,a personal quest for a better future....As simple as that.
Saludos.

Puerto Rico is a territory of the U.S.A., so it is probably easy for them to locate here and they seek to better their employment or standards of living. I know people from U.S.A. that are relocating to other areas as well, including foreign countries like Canada and Mexico. Various reasons for them all.
Have you looked up the topic on Wikipedia? It is a great tool for those who need more information for homework!
