Cord blood banking is when they (doctors) take the blood from the umbilical cord when the baby is born. This cord blood is kept at a cord-blood bank center (at a cost per year), and is used say if your child ends up with leukemeia(sp?), or some other medical condition where they would need bone marrow. This is what I understand from it. Since the blood is your childs, it has all the anti-bodies to fight off diseases. Before cord banking, if a child was stricken with a disease of this type, alot of parents would get pregnant with another child, in order to have a good match for marrow from the baby brother/sister.

Cord blood banking is actually taking the stem cells from the umbilical cord blood and saving them for future use should your baby or a member of your family need them.
Cord blood stem cells can treat a number of diseases from leukemia to anemia. It's important to know that cord blood stem cells are NOT embryonic stem cells.
There is no harm to you or your baby to take the cord blood stem cells.
If you want to save them for your family, you have to enroll with a private bank first. There is a cost involved but you can view it as an insurance for your family.

ok, the cord blood is the blood in the cord that supplies the baby with nutrients from the mother...when you have your baby when they cut the cord and squeeze the blood out of the cord and put it in a blood bag and save it....if your baby (even when the baby is no longer a baby say like 56 or even older lol) ever comes down with certain forms of lukemia or cancer and diseases of that nature...the doc can pull out their cord blood and give them a blood transfusion that cures them. That is the easiest way I know how to explain it....lol their is many more technical explanations. Good luck

It's quite costly but the company stores the blood in the umbilical cord after you give birth. Then if one of your family gets ill there are diseases that the cord blood can treat or possibly cure. I'm not sure which diseases. Try 1-800-cordblood and they can send you information.

Im not sure how it works in your country but in Australia we have private and public banks
The Public banks are donors for everyone to access and are mainly used for people who need stem cells
These are the cells rich in cord blood which help with conditions such as leukemia to replace damaged blood
The private banks are for your own exclusive use and you pay a company to store it
Current studies are still sketcy but they believe that they may, in the future be able to use stem cells for repairing heart disease, diabetes, major cellular damage and many more things as well as leukemia.... This is for use for you your child or anyone in your direct family.. It all comes down to one thing can youafford it.
Its about $3000.00 in australia
Look up a few web sites and get some info from there

This umbilical cord blood is saved when a baby is born, cryogenically stored, and then available if your child later becomes sick and needs a bone marrow transplant. This type of transplant would be 'autologous' and is different than the more common 'allogenic' transplants that might be done from a sibling or other relative or an unrelated donor.

cord blood is used for babies that get sick or blood transfusions bone Mario. If you can afford it than it is a great thing to have done. You will thank your self later if something happens to the baby.
