i was wondering what was in them bc today i was listening to a stereo and there was 4 AA batteries in it and i heard a huge pop and found out that for some reason one of the batteris had exploded. why would it do that and what was the gray liquid substance that was all over the stereo bc of the battery exploding, could it have been mercury, and if so i thought they didnt make batteries with that anymore. could someone answer these questions for me please because i want to know what it was and how to prevent it from happening ever again.

I'm guessing that you were using lithium batteries there are warnings all over those that warn about reversing the contacts or mixing new and old batteries because they will explode.........

"May explode or leak, and cause burn injury if recharged, disposed of in fire, mixed with a different battery type, inserted backwards or disassembled."

This was a warning off this website (drugstore.com) that sells Duracell alkaline batteries.
