i.e. I only want to pay for A&E and court tv. Is it possible to pay for those two channels alone? what service would allow me to do so?

The industry calls this "Ala carte " cable. Most cable companies say that this will cause prices to rise. For instance, ESPN charges the cable company per subscriber, even if some never watch ESPN.Click this link: http://mysearch.myway.com/jsp/GGmain.jsp?st=bar&ptnrS=FK&searchfor=ala+carte+cable. There are many intelligent articles there about this subject.

Not going to happen, and that ISN'T what the Govt is actually working on. If they ever did anything useful though then their "deregulating" cable would have lowered the rates. Well there is still no competition though and likely never will be. As to what the Govt is working on it is basically what they want BUT you would still have to get cable, and the companies so you would likely have to pay more. I believe it becase as they point out some channels are cheap to carry. So you get them in a package with ones that would cost more. Well cut out the cheap ones and most will cost more. Including the cheap ones. Now the channels will cost more because they will want to make up for lost subscribers. It is not going to happen, and the Govt. only gives lip service to it so that people will shut up.

Unfortunately I think the cable company in your area is the only one you have to choose from. Wait 'til the government deregulates the monopoly cable companies have on territories then maybe you'll have a choice. But, for now, you will most likely have to purchase a package deal that gives you way more than A&E and Court TV... you might have to watch Law & Order too.

Nope!! Cable companies are in it for the money. They all have an exclusive (monopolistic) deal with the municipalities they serve (called a franchise and yes they pay the towns like a kickback).

Try satellite. At least they don't raise rates every six months.
