Thinking back, all I remember is pain. Thank god for post labor amnesia! (They don't give any painkillers in Italy, the meanies...)

Have a read of the wiki page - it'll tell you what you want to know

As I recall (no expert - I've only delivered 24 NVD's) it goes a little something like this:

First stage
"Show" (mucous and blood plug comes out)
Cervix dilates
Contractions establish
Water breaks (if it has not already)
Contractions faster
Cervical dilatation reaches 10cm

This all takes much much longer than is represented here. Contractions - contractions - contractions - contractions - you get my drift.

Second stage - assuming normal cephalic delivery

Urge to push
Pushing with contractions, panting between (lamaze breathing etc)
Pushing and bearing down and the delivery of baby's head - midwife or OBGYN will use "main d'accoucher" to prevent tearing of the perineum during delivery of the head (+/- episiotomy)
Check no cord around baby's neck
Deliver body with next contraction (NB shoulder dystocia)
clamp cord
see if dad is in the room ?cut cord
cut cord
Baby to neonatologist (+/- onto mum's tummy for a cuddle if well) check gender

Third stage
Delivery of placenta
Using cut and clamped cord
Traction and counter-traction technique
Gradual delivery and gradual separation to ensure minimal retained products

Rub up the fundus to stimulate fundal contraction

Examine placenta for torn membranes and potential retained products of conception

Repair perineum.
