There are multiple answers to this question, depending on what you are asking...
When you say famous, do you mean famously good or famously bad. Are you considering those films which are the most watched (highest grossing) or well known? Are you considering films which were popular amoung critics or the masses? Or the film which won the most awards?
Highest grossing film of all time is Titanic with $1.8 Billion. With Lord of the Rings: Return of the King coming in 2nd with $1.1 Billion. However, if you adjust gross returns for inflation, then Gone with the Wind would be top grossing film with $2.7 Billion with Snow White and the Seven Dwarves came in second with $2.4 Billion.
AFI rated Citizen Cane as the best film ever. But this film never had a wide audience, so I can not say this is the most famous film.
Ben Hur, Titanic and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King won the most Academy Awards with 11 each. However, Lord of the Rings:Return of the King won in every category in which it was nominated.
Casablance, Godfather, Star Wars were all very famous, although not the highest rated or grossing.
Then you have the famously bad movies like From Justin to Kelly, Gigli, Batman and Robin.
Also, I never saw Gone with the Wind, but I know many who have. And since it is the highest grossing film (adjusted for inflation) then it is possibly the most famous.
My personal choice would be Godfather. Who can ever forget the scene with the movie producer waking up with a horses head in his bed... that is classic.

Citizen Kane always wins the 'best' movie of all time but the most 'famous' must change constantly with the changing audience.
Most of today's cinema-goers will have barely even heard of Citizen Kane - and you can probably count the amount who have actually SEEN it on the fingers of one foot!
The most 'famous' movie in the minds of the current audience is probably one of those spun sugar confections churned out to please the mass market - 'Wizard of Oz', 'Sound of Music' & 'Mary Poppins' spring to mind.
(Though at least Wizard of Oz did have a darker side.)
Maybe you would get a better perspective on what are considered 'famous' films by checking out other questions that have asked for peoples 'favourite' film; after all, nobody votes for a fave without it achieving SOME level of fame. (Though Michael Douglas & Sean Penn seem to have managed it with a wonderful film called "The Game"!)
