Where is it? At night when they are less active/dormant...knock it down with a shovel or rake(something with a long handle) Then take Brake fluid or wd40 or even charcoal lighter and douse it and then set it on fire..done!

Gasoline can kill the vegetation around the hole. It is better to use Sevin (carbaryl) dust or Eight dust by Bonide.
Put a brick beside the hole some afternoon. If you don't have a duster use an old clean squeeze catsup bottle. Put about 1/8th cup of Sevin dust into the bottle. Then some cool evening (they are less active when it's cool) put a lantern out illuminating the hole. Put it about 90 degrees from your approach route. If any are missed they are photosensitive and will go to the light instead of to you.
Walk gently up to the hole. Put the top of the catsup bottle over the hole (it can even touch the ground) and squeeze all the dust into the hole. Immediately pick up the brick and place it over the hole so they are trapped down there for the night. In the morning they will all be dead.
Walk away normally. They have bad eyes for forming images but very good eyes at detecting motion. So you don't want to make sudden or quick movements that they may pick up.

no and you dont want to tick them off.......wait till dusk and use diesel fuel and soak the ground after plugging the hole, at all times and i say this again....hornets have 2 guards at the entrance at all times..and i mean all times...they are the guards they alert the nest of intruders...the size of the nest below ground maybe the size of a football..be careful plugging the hole, as i said at dusk all the bees are back in the nest...douse the ground with diesel or kero and light it on fire.....dont use gasoline for crying out loud if you get a pocket of gas that isnt lite, it could act like a bomb and imange that, not only do u get a fireball but a thousand burning bees coming out too......if you dont want to go this route call your local pet control tech...good luck

You can by using soapy water. The soap will take the wax off the wings causing them to not be able to fly.

No, they can swim, but if you get a gas can and pour gasoline down it, it will kill them and prevent them from renesting.
