As Corwy.. said, from wikipedia, "a tyrant possesses absolute power through the people in a state or in an organization: one refers to this mode of rule as a tyranny."

With that said, many world leaders, including Bush, could currently be classified as tyrants with their current populace being controlled by tyranny.

Tyranny is oppression of The masses. We have a $9 trillion national debt under Republicans. Working class tax payers will pay that, that is tyranny. In Iraq we have 14,000 people in prison. No charges, no outside contact, not even the Red Cross, no lawyers. That is tyranny. Americans claim to want to give Iraq democracy but many Americans defend the indefensible. that is tyranny. Many Americans trash the 5th and 14th amendments of our own Constitution. Bush went into Iraq based on lies and then he switched to the liberation of Iraq from the tyranny of Saddam. Since Desert Storm over 300,000 civilians have died in Iraq. They are in fact liberated. That is tyranny.

The word Tyrant is generally referring to someone with absolute power over a country or state and carries a connotation of cruel despots who place their own interests or the interests of a small oligarchy over the "best" interests of the general population which they govern or control.

Bush, for example, is an usurping tyrant. Usurping because he was not voted in by the people, but was placed in power by a few people that were loyal to him (his daddy and Reagan appointed the the majority in the Supreme Court...in fact everyone that sided with Bush in the trial of Bush v. Gore was appointed by Bush Sr or Reagan...except one.), and tyrant for the absolute power given him by a complicit Republican Congress, as well as putting his own interests and the interests of his small "oligarchy" ahead of the interests of the People. Sacrificing human lives for his own profit.

When you're not allowed to question the government without being labeled as "unpatriotic"

Just like whats happening now with the conservatives and their moaning and wailing at anyone who dares criticize Bush.
