You can put in an exercise wheel, rats also like toys. Go to your local pet store and look at the different things they have for rats, you'll be amazed at the selction!

Some of the ideas I like are using "leaping ledges." They can be found in the rodent section of places like Petsmart. I think they have a Chinchilla on the front, but they are wood with a screw in the back so you can vary the height and make stairs of a sort. They can then lounge on whatever height they want.
Ferret hammocks are also dearly loved by my ratsies! They snuggle right in with the tail hanging out one end and whiskers peeking out the other. Also if you get those cardboard "Chubes" or an empty oatmeal canister, you can zippy tie it to the top of the cage and they think that is a great lookout spot!
I love zippy ties because you can affix things like paper towel rolls to the cage which makes getting the treats out more challenging. So buy a big bag and get creative. I change up their environment all the time so they don't get bored. I have even used a tube sock instead of a ferret hammock. That worked out well, again with the zippy ties.
My ratsies are not so fond of the wheel though. They could care less. They would rather run the floor even since they were young. Now they are old, at 3 years of age (isn't it wonderful!!) so they just mosey everywhere.
Tree branches are ok if you buy them from the store and not just go cut some down. You never know who has sprayed pesticides on what.
The best food I have found, which is obviously working well for us since our rats are ancient, is Reggie Rat. I would give that a try in addition to rodent blocks and people food. It is a very balanced food and I strongly believe it contributes to their longevity.
Best of luck! Be creative! They will love you for it. Hide treats everywhere!

In my rats cage I have their igloo house and a ferret tunnel thing that hangs from the top of the cage. You could try other ferret toys, too, just make sure that they're washable since most rats aren't too picky as to where they go pee, haha.
I also have a few of those jingly cat toys (or bird toys) which have spaces around the bells. I put treats in them. I have a couple scattered on the bottom of the cage, but I put one hanging from the top as well- just make sure to check them regularly for signs of chewing and replace broken ones. My rats aren't major chewers so I haven't had to worry about that much.
I also have a bird rope from one end of the cage to the other, off of the bottom, for them to climb to the next level.

A running wheel (hard plastic, not wire rungs, they can get their tails caught).
Paper towel and toilet paper tolls are good sport. Especially if there is still some TP left on the roll!!
I give my rats, ferret and cat toys and they love them. They also each have a bell hanging in their cage (you can find them in the bird section of a pet store)- they love ringing them. I wouldn't recommend it if your rat is in your room though. They seem to ring them most late at night.
Also clean cardboard milk cartons are a favorite sleeping spot for my rats.
Good luck and have fun "decorating"!

Mine love hanging bird toys, cat balls with bells in them, bird perches, hammocks, bird ladders and homemade toys. Here are a few links on how to make your own rat toys. The rat pinata is definitely a favorite.

I love rats! I had to girls myself. Rats love anything cardboard. They actually need things to chew because their teeth are always growing and they will get too long eventually. Anything wooden and cardboard is great. They also love things to climb in and out of.

A wheel. Or a Tunnel. Go to the hamster section at a pet supply store and see what they have.

What about a small tree branch or something for them to climb on (I'd research to make sure the wood is harmless first).
