So, I am having an argument with someone about whether a leather couch or at least the leather part of the leather couch is or is not water proof. I dont own one so I am asking people who do. If you spill a drink on your leather couch, the liquid will just bead and you can wipe it up correct? Does it stain the couch at all? What do you think?

it all depends on the leather
leather/skin is porous
if it has been treated it will hold back liquid for a few minutes,
this is called corrected leather
if it has been lightly treated it will hold back liquid for about a minute
this is called semi-analine leather
if it is natural leather this has no treatment apart from natural tanning this will not hold back liquid at all and when you dry it off you will be left with a dark stain on the leather
this is called analine leather
hope this helps..
but i am afraid you are wrong

The answer to your lead question is "No"; untreated leather, such as rawhide, is not waterproof. But what you are talking about is treated leather, and it will most likely be waterproof. The company that made the couch knew people would spill things on it, didn't want to get the reputation of putting out crappy products, and therefore treated the leather to be waterproof.

It's not waterproof. It may have a coating to help water bead but normal leather absorbs water. IN fact they make things )like mink oil) to help make leather waterproof, as well as more supple and so forth. Is a baseball glove waterproof?

It depends upon how the leather was treated...
untreated leather will soak up water and stain...
to make leather waterproof it needs to be treated.. that is why people keep their shoes treated.. or their rain hats.. or their leather jackets.

once you treat it, yes, it is water and stain proof.
but they dont come from the store that way.
if leather were waterproof, then why do cows look for trees to get under when it rains?

leather is skin and dry skin absorbs moisture. The longer the skin/moisture contact the more absorption.
