10% of the students that attend live on campus, however, I don't know how many, if any, of that percentage are first year students.

RE:
Would San Francisco State University allow first-year students to live off-campus ?

Being a SF State Student myself, they don't expect you to live on-campus if you don't want to. The reason for that is because Freshmen Dorms are always full. A lot of students are put on waitlists, especially for the Community Dorms.

My friend lived off campus his first year, his reason was that he applied late for housing, and for him living off-campus was a better choice.

You can check out the Villas Housing, Craigslist For Roommates, Roommate Finder on Sfsu.edu/~housing for offcampus information.

you can also contact the housing office.

I live about 10 minutes from the University, and I know their admissions process because I got accepted there, though I went to another Univeristy.

SF State will NOT require you to live on campus. In fact, they will encourage you to live off-campus because they have so many students coming in that they want to keep the dorms open to out of state students as well as southern cali students. Personally, I would suggest not to live off-campus. Living on campus will give you many more opportunities for friendships and resources for your studies.

Looks like there is no hard requirement for freshmen to live on campus due to the commuting nature of the school.

Many universities have a freshman residency requirement, but you would have to check specifically with SFSU. It also depends on if you are going to be a commuter or not.
