I have potted perennials and dearly love them. Since I cannot put them in the earth, can I mulch them heavily or maybe put them between bales of straw to keep them alive? There are azaleas, bergenia, tulips, etc.

Yes they can be kept alive by bringing them in also, Bulb such as tulips can be artificially restated by placing the entire plant into the freezer for a week/

Put them on the window sill so they get enough sunlight. Even in winter there is sun - if you live in Alaskan darkness you can use a light. My grandmother used to do that and always had the most beautiful flowers in the winter.
Personally, I only like flowers when someone else does all the work.

as long as the roots do not freeze they will be fine
