It shows 'weirdness' of quantum mechanics. Read about superposition. The point is it appears just absurd, but in quantum mechanics(atom and smaller things) things like this really do occur. I think it does point out obvious problems with observations in the context of general science and philosophy.

The idea is that the cat is both alive and dead at the same time while the box is closed. We don't know if we will find the cat alive or dead when we open the box. In other words, the outcome could be either one. The observer can't see in the box to tell which condition the cat is in. Once the observer opens the box, the experiment is ended. The cat is determined by our observation to be either alive or dead to the observer. If another person were to try the same thing, but they opened the box at a different time to observe, they may have found the cat to be very alive.

It is unfortunate that Schroedinger selected a cat to illustrate a principle that only exists at sub atomic particle levels. Because of the choice of a cat, some of the most absurd ideas have been floated around as if they had some sanity to them. Macro events are not triggered by isolated single nano events.
In theory, ONLY, we don't know the fate of the cat. But in reality we do know the fate BECAUSE the probability is insignificant that we would not know. The probabilities only become interesting at the sub atomic level.
It is silly to pretend that we don't know something because of an insignificant possibility that we don't. This just feeds into the arguments of people who think there is a possibility that the world is flat or that the Theory of Evolution hasn't been decided yet.

I can help you..because quantum particles are in wave form until they are "observed" according to the heisenberg uncertainty principle, the cat is both "alive" and "dead" inside the box because you have not yet observed whether the poison capsule has been activated. In essence, there are two universes involved inside the box. In one, the cat is alive, and in the other, the cat is dead. Observing the inside of the box will tell you which universe You are in.

you change the outcome of subatomic particles and movement by observing them. the cat is both alive and dead and the outcome is not know until you look so by looking you technically force an outcome.
