Saddam was a Sunni, which is one of the two biggest Muslim sects. He favored the Sunnis in his regime. Shiites did not have the possibilities to advance professionally and often did not get the same treatments in their areas as to living standards/infrastructure improvements. The Kurds are often Sunni, but Saddam did not treat them like other Sunnis. The Kurds do not consider themselves Arabs, like the rest of the Iraqis. They dissented from Saddam. Before the Persian war, Saddam had often committed horrible mass murders of the Kurds, less so to the Shiites. After the war, because both the Shiites and the Kurds took sides against Saddam, he became even more savage. He committed mass murders, tortures, used chemical weapons, all kinds of horror against both of those groups. Go to the BBC site. www. bbc.com. Saddam is a Sunni, the majority of Iraq are Shiites, the Kurds are more Turk that Arab.
After WWI Winston Churchill drew arbitrary lines for modern Iraq it has been a disaster since. Sunni, Shiite, Kurds; Bad mixture. Iraq is Arab; Iran is Persian; They don't really get along either (the Arabs and Persians).

The Kurds are an ethnic group who consider themselves to be indigenous to a region often referred to as Kurdistan, an area which includes adjacent parts of Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey and are ethnically related to Iranians. Kurds are typically Sunni Muslims, although many are Shiites. Shiites and Sunnis represent the major denominations of Islam.

Saddam Hussein is a Sunni muslim. He had control of his country and oppressed everyone, even his Shiite muslim brothers. The Kurds are a separate clan in the north of Iraq.
They are shiites. The sunnis are a minority in Iraq, but under Saddam were predominant.
Before and after the gulf war, when the Kurds, were upset the Sunnis under Saddam used chemical and traditional warfare against them.
