A lawn needs one inch of water a week to keep it healthy. A good way to figure out how much that is is to put a clean soup can out when you are watering the lawn and time ho long it takes to gather 1" of water in the can. If it takes 45 min, for example, that means with your system your lawn requires 45 minutes of watering a week. I usually advise that be split into two sessions of 22 or 23 minutes each. Some times is nature helps you you can skip on of the waterings. Usually more than one inch isn't that much more beneficial to the lawn to justify doing it.

If the area you live is hot and dry as well as sunny then water twice a day early morning 5:00 am to 6:30 am June through Sept. Then in the evening after the sun has gone down between 7:00pm and 9:00 pm. If it is just a sunny area and is moist as in Florida water once a day in the AM. It is correct that a night watering will encourage molds and disease but in areas as New Mexico, Arizona the heat of the day will dry out the soil and a late watering will soften the soil making it easier for the roots to grow. Never water in the heat of the day the water droplets magnify the sun's rays and burns the blades of grass.

Daily watering of lawns makes them shallow rooted. Try to give the lawn a regular "deep drink" as advised previously when it needs it. Don't mow your lawn too short. If your leave the grass blades longer the roots of the turf become deeper, the grass feeds better and provides a bit of shade to the roots. Works for me in Australia.

only water once a day
but water doesn't make the grass green
only fertilizer does that love and try to fertilize 4 times a year.
even if u buy one bag of fertilizer and divide it into four you don't need alot just pfollow instructions on the product.
if you have a warm season grass then fertilze in the Spring
ir it is a cool season grass fertilize in Autum or Spring

Water it in the morning, 3-4 day a week, for longer. Longer watering, less often is best.
