Actually, the best way to become a bartender is to start out as a barback in a place that does a lot of business. The general rule of thumb, is that the busier bars DONT hire people that went to "bartending school" because they would rather train them in a particular way.
If you do go to the school, then the best job you'll get out of it is something maybe at a restaurant, or hotel...something slow paced [i.e. not a lot of tips]...but maybe that's what you're looking for.

U can probably take the test at a local bartending school, after taking the classes

If you don't want to go to school try a small bar and bring along the bartenders black book and your'll be fine. Alot of jobs take ppl that have just been in the environment, with just personal experience

The certification does look good, but it is not needed

I don't think so. I have several friends who have gone to school to be licensed which is what most restaurants require. However, if you plan on working for some hole in the wall you may be able to get by with having experience.

you can try taking the test but doubt you will pass until you have some training.....no short cuts in this profession....do the steps that we all have to go through...........
