I think the clapping is a way of them saying, "Who all agrees with me? That was a wonderful scene!!"

It's more than just laughing at the humor. It also means that particular scene went beyond mere humor, it was well delivered, and extremely well filmed.

Clapping originated of course, in live theatre. In a very short part-time career as an actress at a dinner theatre some years ago, I learned that the audience is actually considered part of the theatre group. Their enthusiasm, or lack of it, changes the entire play. I could see those changes firsthand when we did a play for several weeks in a row. Every performance was a bit different, depending on the audience.

Sometimes, a movie is so well done, the audience feels that same sense of enthusiasm. And enjoying it along with the rest of the audience makes it even better.

Each to their own though to be fair to them. We laugh and take mobiles to the cinema and they clap when they see something humorous. Whats more annoying? mobiles or clapping for a few second?

How many cinemas do you go to that have americans watching films?

Why do people have to be so critical/pass remarkable about what others do when it is not causing harm to anyone. So the Americans clap in the cinema, fair play to them!

Who cares? No one HAS to do anything...just what they WANT to do. I'm American and I don't clap at the MOVIES. Stop stereotyping Americans.

because they think its so funny, that they have to ruin the next few minutes of the film in its honour.
Yeah i hate it when they do that. wonder if they notice there is no one to clap to and the screen does no care for their applause

it's a spontanuous reaction... a culture or habit, i think.
i dont really know. in indonesia only some ppl do that, if they go to cinema together with their friends-->more than 5 ppl in a group.
if theyre alone or just have a friend with them, they'll keep silent.

Because Americans are lovely, enthusiastic people but their manners aren't always the best.
