I think this is inexcusable. I have to arrange for agency nurse cover everytime someone does this - even when you know they are going somewhere and could not get a day off.
We have responsibilites as part of our rights. if we are paid to work then we should work.
If you are tired - be honest call in explain that you are tired and want to take some hours or some days leave but don't lie and make it a sick day if it isn't. Some poor sap has to do at least part of your job for you. AAARGH!

For you not to ring in then you have to be pretty sick. So sick that you can't make it to the phone at all. In an employers eyes you would have to be unconscious to not to be able to make that call. Instantly they would suspect you are fibbing.
Ok, here's what you do.
You call and don't make your voice sound ill as they know it's crap. Talk normal but not energetic. Say that you have had an upset stomach since Saturday and that you have possibly picked up a bug from someone, such as a baby that you have come in to contact with over the weekend. Say you are unable to control your bowl movements and that the gassiness of your stomach makes you feel sick.
Your boss or whoever takes the call will not want to discuss this with you as no matter who they are, talking sickness makes others feel ill. Say that you may be out for 48 hours but if the bug persists you may have to get a doctors appointment. This then leaves it open if you wish to take another day out at leisure.
If you don't make the call you will only feel worse when you have to face your boss upon your return.
Happy sick day (or two)
Good luck.

I would love to have the next couple of days of sick, as I really am ill with a very bad cold, which is now into day 4, but unfortunately I cant as I have a Meeting whole day tomorrow which is very important, and my boss is off as well, so someone needs to sort the office out.

It depends on your reason for being sick, for example if you said that you had a migraine then you should get your partner to do it because migraine sufferers can't stand the slightest bit of noise as it can make them feel sick.

I would get my partner to phone in because it would seem more truthfull, like i was stuck in bed and also, it is harder to talk like your sick!

dont get your partner to call in for you unless you have lost your voice, its suspious and a bit like yuor mum calling in school for you. I know as someon asked me to do it for them and there boss sacked them over it. face up to it and call yourself and pull the best sicky you can! and you dont have to do a sick voice they cant see you remeber!
