In Australia the Daddy Long Legs is a well known house spider. There is a common myth that this spider has the deadliest venom of all arachnids but cannot harm humans due to having small fangs that cannot break our skin. While the general toxicity of this spider is unknown, the myth of it having deadly venom is just that, a myth. In actuality there are many more spiders whose venom will do you much more harm, among others, the funnel-web spider and the Brazilian Wandering spider.
In the U.K the crane fly is referred to as a Daddy Longlegs. This is not a spider, it is in fact just a large fly. They are not deadly, as I'm sure many of you will testify!
For more info on crane flies see www.the-piedpiper.co.uk, or visit www.usq.edu.au/spider/index.htm for info on the Daddy Long Legs.

Hello,
The flying daddy long legs is not a spider and also not deadly, in fact it doesn't even have teeth/fangs or a sting,
However there is a tropical spider called Daddy long legs which is poisonous and probably the reason for the confusion of the two.

Yes and no. True “daddy-long-legs” are spiders and they aren’t remotely dangerous to humans.
“Daddy-long-legs” is the common name for a spider of the family Pholcidae. They have 2 body basic body parts (cephalothorax and abdomen), have 8 eyes most often clumped together in the front of the body, the abdomen shows no evidence of segmentation, have 8 legs all attached to the front most body part (the cephalothorax) and make webs out of silk. The most common pholcid spiders found Europe and the UK is Pholcus phalangioides.
Their venom is completely harmless to mammals, and their “fangs” are far too small and weak to pierce human skin anyway.

Yes, daddy long legs are spiders, and yes, they are the most deadly of spiders, but they can't actually bite the humans, so you're okay.

They are NOT craneflies. A cranefly looks like a gigantic mosquito. They are not spiders but are in the arachnid family. I always told people they don't bite until I handed my child one and it bent its face down and punctured his hand. From the yelling it hurt too so they do bite. They are NOT poisonous but they are carnivorous and will stalk and catch bugs, insects, and smaller daddy long legs.
