Swings

The reason it has been oft used is because 'neither one is better than the other.

[ I'm not sure if it is a part of the expression, 'What you lose on the swings, you gain on the roundabout.' ]

It is saying the same thing 'differently' to another expression -

'Horses for courses.'

What it means is, one enters the kind of horse suited to the kind of course ....and to help a little further, you'd be a bit silly (or more) if you were to put a horse that ran well over 'the flat,' into a race where there were fences for it to jump ...as I (knowing nothing more on that particular subject) understand it.

My wife will sometimes be heard to say, 'We should have gone the other route,' and said without knowing whether there is maybe a worse holdup on the other route than the one taken.

It's the same thing as 'swings n roundabouts,' really.

There, hope you are now enlightened.

Regards.
Sash.

Swings. You have more control and can choose when to get on and off. With roundabouts you are at other people's mercy.

They both hold a special place in my memories as a child. But if I had to choose- then I'd go with the roundabout!!

Swings! I LOVE the swings in our back garden. When the children's friends have gone home and it's just me and my three beautiful babies (2 three yr olds and a 9 yr old) we chat and swing - its wonderful! :-))

Swings. I'd rather go up and down than round and round.
