Looking for cabin-type lodging in Yosemite for 6 adults. Anyone know of a good spot or even recommendations of good areas within Yosemite where we should be looking to stay (near good hiking, possibly waterfalls, etc.)?

For wood cabins, you have one choice and that is Curry Village, still referred to by those of us oldtimers as Camp Curry.

When you hit the link below, you at first see tent cabins. Scroll down and you'll see that there are wood cabins as well.

Explore other pages of the site run by a non-profit organization. Yosemite village does not have cabins, but it may be more pratical for your group. The rooms there that I have stayed in do have a cabin feel to the interior, but the are in multiunit buildings.

If you are unable to find anything for the dates you wish to go, do not stay in Fresno. In El Portal, west of the valley entrance, there are motels. El Portal is an area in a canyon along the Merced River.

The waterfalls vary during the year. Late spring early summer is usually best. Some falls will be only a trickle now. A few will be dry. Yosemite Falls and those on the Merced River (Vernal and Nevada) are reduced, but still worth seeing.

We stayed there in June. Great place spend a couple of days. be aware of (if you are driving) some roads are closed in winter, the one road for us was closed because of some unseasonal weather in June so phone ahead to check the weather. Book in advance as much as possible. We stayed at the Curry campground, really nice for a campground. Although pricey as most places are there. They have a range of accomodation from cabins to permanent tents with wooden floors. There is a hotel also which may be around the same price and have a bit more luxury. Excellent bus serivces to the walking trails and excellent maps etc given out by hotels/campgrounds and local rangers, just go to the info centre they are very helpful.

I would have to recommend you look for lodging in the town of Oakhurst (I am fond of the Best Western there) or in Wiwona. Most of the lodging, even the camping in the valley at Yosemite is outrageously expensive and you need reservations well in advance of your trip.

All I can recommend at the moment, is to park your car at the parking lot for all backpacking trips. (Bear Proof your car)!! Then hike up to Half Dome!!! You can hike all the way up to Nevada Falls, stop and have lunch, and check out the top of Nevada Falls. Then go about another 2 miles and camp for the night. Then get up the next morning and continue the rest of the way up to Half Dome and climb up the cables to the top of Half Dome. I would say just camp out in the wilderness!! That way you dont pay for lodging and its alot more fun!!!!!!!! I would do that in the Summer though!!

I camped when I was there, so I can't help you out with a hotel. But I do want to say that you are going there at the best time of year! I know there's been a drought this year, but springtime (when the snow is melting) is the most beautiful time of year to watch the waterfalls. I hope you enjoy it!
