Most of the European washers are front load, vertical spin type washers, that also heat their own water. Most American washers, on the other hand, are top load, horizontal spin machines that rely on a separate household hot water heater to provide hot water. It takes time to heat the water to a proper temperature, as well as to provide the higher RPM's used to spin the clothing out. In my experience, the European style washers get the clothing cleaner. They also use less water and detergent. Clothing is moved through a pool of water in European style machines, as opposed to stewing in a great pot of it, as is the case with the American style. European washers also usually give you a choice of determining the actual temperature of the wash and rinse water, as opposed to the choices of hot, warm or cold offered by the American style. You have that choice, as the machine will be heating the water and can use the inbuilt thermostat to determine the temperature. Wash temperatures in American washers have to simply use the water provided at the temperature provided, and mix hot/cold according to predetermined combination settings. If your water happens to be hotter or colder than those used to make the settings, your hot/warm/cold temperatures will vary quite a bit as well.

Have you done a thorough and detailed survey comparing UK washing machines to N. American washing machines?
Didn't think so.
You can't use one or two machines in the UK and then assume they all take longer. I assure you, all consumer electronics in the UK are just as good if not better than in North America.
The mom: I live in the UK and all UK washing machines I have ever known take hot and cold water from the house supply and then mix them. They don't heat the water themselves.

The UK water might be thicker and take longer to pump through the clothes during the cycle.
I have never heard of that at all. If someone moved to UK from N America and brought along their washing machine I don't think they would be spending more time on their laundry chores. maybe someone was kidding you about the times.

That is interesting.. I did not know that.. If that is so, then perhaps the ONLY thing that I can think of is that:
a) clothes are dirtier in the U.K. than in N. America(just a joke)
b) the settings are completely different.. I opt for this
